blown glass, flameworked borosilicate glass
Biotope is inspired by a riverbank ecosystem on Wagalu country in sub-alpine NSW. Here, plants, soils, sand, and stone work together to capture silt, filter rain and purify water as it moves downstream. These processes create conditions that attract insects and animals seeking shelter, protection, and sustenance.
I wanted to capture the rich margin of life between land and water during the active cycle of spring to summer. The glass evokes glossy water currents bending around stone sediment, while rushes and reeds flower and multiply, forming dense pockets of interdependent life.
