Finding a Way

native Swiss water plants, borosilicate glass
Water plants are the lungs of brackish and fresh water. Their complex root systems are found in dams, river systems and lagoons. They are steadily efficient as filters in times of drought and flood, making them pions of resilience and restoration. In this work, five glass microenvironments have been created to highlight the wonder of organic growth. As the plants push roots and fill their homes, it is as if the tubes themselves are evolving into little creatures, mimicking aspects of plants with flower buds and berries, or reflecting characteristics of sea creatures with stingers and tails.
The glass is melted, blown, twisted and pulled using a torch that burns at 1200 degrees. It is a process that is fraught with danger and the constant threat of breakage - or of a component melting at exactly the wrong time. When correctly manipulated, the glass can transform into a receptacle for growth, and remind us of the careful balance required to lovingly steward living
environments. These fragile objects and their living progeny are a reminder to remain curious and heedful of the interdependence of plants and humans, for their mutual nurture.
